The Bio-computing Research Center (BRC) was established in September 2003. It is one of the earliest research centers established in Harbin Institute of Technology (Shenzhen), and it is affiliated to the School of Computer Science and Technology. The main research areas of the center include: computer vision, machine learning, pattern recognition, bioinformatics, medical image/signal processing technology, multimedia analysis, big data analysis, etc.

BRC was founded by Professor David Zhang (Fellow of the Academy of Science of the Royal Society of Canada, IEEE Fellow). BRC has an excellent research team, consisting of 7 full-time faculty members (including 3 professors, 1 associate professor, and 3 assistant professors), 5 postdoctoral fellows, and nearly 100 doctoral and master students. Benefitting from excellent research facilities, abundant funding and professional academic atmosphere, BRC conducts cutting-edge research and maintains close connections with industries.

So far, the research team has won 3 provincial and ministerial scientific research awards, authorized more than 30 domestic and foreign patents, and published 8 monographs. Besides, the research team has published more than 300 academic papers in top international journals such as TPAMI, IJCV, TNNLS, TIP, TCYB, TMM and international conferences such as CVPR, ICCV, AAAI, IJCAI, ACM MM, SIGIR, among which nearly 20 are highly cited papers. BRC has undertaken nearly a hundred of projects, including the national natural science foundation of china, ‘863’ program, provincial and municipal science and technology program, school-enterprise cooperation project and so on. A number of research results have been industrialized applications, such as intelligent video analysis technology, TCM objectification technology and system, face recognition technology, palmprint recognition technology, video coding technology, information retrieval, etc., which have created huge economic value for enterprises.
