Computer Application Research Center (CARC) was established in 2009. It is one of the earliest research centers established in the School of Computer Science and Technology, Harbin Institute of Technology (Shenzhen). The director of CARC is Prof. Xuan Wang. Currently, CARC has 11 teachers, including 2 professors/doctoral supervisors, 2 associate professors, 3 assistant professors, 3 distinguished professors, and 1 senior lecturer. The research team consists of 11 faculty members, including 2 professors, 2 associate professors, 3 assistant professors, 3 distinguished professors, and 1 senior lecturer. The main research areas of the center include: artificial intelligence, game decision making, intelligent man-machine interface, multimedia information processing and quantum information.

In the Annual Computer Poker Competition (ACPC) organized by AAAI, CARC has maintained the top 3 of the world and No. 1 of the Asia for 5 years. In the Reconnaissance Blind Chess Competition held by NIPS, CARC won the first place in a subitem. CARC has undertaken more than 40 projects which includes National Key Scientific and Technological Project, National 863 Project, National Nature Science and Technology Foundation of China Projects, National GF Key Project, and projects funded by Microsoft, ZTE, Ricoh and other companies. Up to now, CARC has won the first prize of the Ministry of Education of China, the second prize of the Ministry of Space of China, the first prize of the invention award of Guangdong Province, Shenzhen Science and Technology Innovation Award and Shenzhen Science and Technology Progress Award for once, respectively. Besides, CARC has obtained 11 national invention patents and published more than 150 academic papers (SCI/EI).

CARC has established several public platforms and joint labs such as Shenzhen Internet Multimedia Application Technology Engineering Laboratory, Cloud Computing Public Technology Service Platform, Natural Language Processing and Speech Microsoft Key Laboratory (Shenzhen), the Financial Research Center of Guangdong – Hong Kong – Macao Greater Bay Area of Ping An Technology, and labs jointly established with some famous companies such as Ricoh and Xunyu. A number of research results have industrialized applications and created significant social and economic benefits.
