Biography

Dr. Zheng Zhang is currently an Assistant Professor at the School of Computer Science & Technology, Harbin Institute of Technology (Shenzhen), China. Prior to this, he received his M.S. degree in Computer Science (2014) and Ph.D. degree in Computer Applied Technology (2018) from the Harbin Institute of Technology. His Ph.D. Thesis won the Distinguished Doctor Degree Thesis Award of Harbin Institute of Technology. During his Ph.D. study, he visited the National Laboratory of Pattern Recognition (NLPR) at Chinese Academy of Sciences (CAS), Beijing, working with Prof. Cheng-Lin Liu (Director of the Laboratory, IEEE Fellow and IAPR Fellow), from Jun. 2015 to Jun. 2016. Dr. Zhang was a Research Associate at The Hong Kong Polytechnic University from Apr. 2018 to Oct. 2018. He then joined in School of Information Technology and Electrical Engineering, The University of Queensland, Australia, as a Postdoctoral Research Fellow from Oct. 2018 to Sep. 2019. He has published over 40 technical papers at prestigious international journals and conferences, including the IEEE TPAMI, IEEE TNNLS, IEEE TIP, IEEE TCSVT, Pattern Recognition, CVPR, ECCV, AAAI, IJCAI, SIGIR, ACMM, ICDM and etc. He received the Best Paper Award from 2014 International Conference on Smart Computing (SMARTCOMP).

 

Research Interests

I have a broad interest in Machine Learning, Computer Vision, Pattern Recognition and Data Mining models, with a focus on developing scalable algorithms to learn robust data representations from large-scale data for different applications. My research topics mainly include:

1) Large-scale Image Recognition, Clustering and Data Analytics

2) Big Data Retrieval, Learning to Hash, Efficient Video Analytics

3) Sparse and Low-rank Modeling, Subspace Learning, and Regression Analysis

4) Deep Learning (Especially on Deep Autoencoder, Deep CNN and GAN)

5) Convex Optimization and Matrix Factorization
